AI in China in 2025: an alternative market exploding and reshaping global competition

AI adoption in China plus 13 percent in 2024 — Chinese generative AI market acceleration

China recorded the fastest AI adoption growth among global organizations in 2024: +13% in a single year, according to McKinsey and Stanford University. With its own large model ecosystem, massive mobile AI applications, and growing investments, China constitutes an AI market with dynamics distinct from the West.

An autonomous large model ecosystem

China has built an AI large model ecosystem independent from American players. Baidu with Wenxiaoyan, Moonshot AI with Kimi Chat, Zhipu AI and MiniMax all have millions of active users. These mobile AI applications attracted hundreds of millions of unique users in 2024, with generative AI mobile penetration growing rapidly.

AI investments: sustained acceleration

AI investments in China followed a strong growth trajectory from 2012 to 2023. In 2024, AIGC investments remain sustained, with most concentrated at early stages.

This structure — many early-stage startups, fewer mega-platforms — contrasts with the US market dominated by a few highly capitalized players (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind).

What the Chinese market reveals about global dynamics

China's AI progression has two implications. First, competitive: alternative AI tools, cheaper, will pressure global prices. Good news for SMEs.

Second, geopolitical: the fragmentation of the AI ecosystem into blocs (US, EU, China) strengthens the digital sovereignty argument. For European companies, choosing EU-hosted tools becomes a strategic decision.
