61% of new global unicorns are AI startups — what this number reveals

In 2025, according to CB Insights, 61% of newly minted unicorns worldwide are AI startups. Even more striking: 1 in 5 new unicorns in 2025 is specifically an AI agent. This figure illustrates where economic value is concentrating in AI in 2025.
The AI agent: the new category taking over
The fact that 1 in 5 unicorns in 2025 is an AI agent is significant. An AI agent — unlike a simple chatbot — is a system capable of executing tasks autonomously, making sequential decisions, and integrating into existing workflows.
For operational teams, this translates into tools capable of automatically analyzing a ticket database, classifying incoming calls by urgency level, or generating executive summaries without human intervention.
India and Nigeria: the emerging AI markets
According to KPMG International and the University of Melbourne, India and Nigeria show the highest AI adoption rates worldwide in 2025, with 92% of consumers using AI regularly. This exceeds Singapore (73%) and Western economies.
Adoption momentum now comes from emerging markets — creating new requirements for multilingual capability.
What the acceleration since 2023 means
The share of AI startups among unicorns more than doubled between 2021 and 2025. The real acceleration happened between 2023 and 2025 — corresponding to the mass deployment of consumer LLMs that made AI accessible to non-technical teams.
